Philanthropy

Sigma Kappa provides many opportunities for members to become involved with diverse community service projects. Specifically, our sorority supports five different philanthropies: the Alzheimer's Association, Inherit the Earth, the Maine Seacoast Mission, the Sigma Kappa Foundation, and Gerontology. Throughout the year, we hold many charity events and fundraisers to benefit each of our causes.

The three main events that we host throughout the year are the Walk to End Alzheimer's, a community fundraiser, the All-American Cookout, a charity barbecue, and Sigma Kappa Spikeball. Sigma Kappas also actively participate the philanthropies of other organizations on campus, in Greek life and beyond. Our members are encouraged to serve the community for at least seven hours per quarter!

Walk to End Alzheimer's

Every fall, we're proud to team up with the Alzheimer's Association for the annual Walk to End Alzheimer's! In downtown San Luis Obispo, community members join our chapter in a movement to find a cure for the tragic illness.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, Alzheimer's is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Symptoms usually develop slowly and worsen over time, often interfering with everyday tasks. 5 million people in the United States are currently living with the illness and 83,000 die from it every year. Additionally, women have a 1 in 6 chance of developing Alzheimer's compared to men's 1 in 11 chance.

The Walk to End Alzheimer's is an event that our members hold dear to our hearts, as it has affected many of our loved ones. Each year, Sigma Kappa raises hundreds of thousands of dollars to fund Alzheimer's research, care, and awareness.

This year, we raised a total of $42,481!

Ultra Violet Gala

This year, our chapter was proud to host its very first Ultra Violet Gala! Our members spent months during spring quarter fundraising to support the Ultra Violet Foundation. At the gala, members and guests donned in formal attire headed to San Luis Obispo's Higuera Ranch for a night to remember.

Throughout the night, we sought to bring awareness to the reality of Alzheimer's disease. Meghan Butler, our VP of Philanthropic Services, kicked off the gala with an introductory speech about the illness, along with ways we can help victims. First year member Lili Lebaron shared her personal story facing Alzheimer's, and second year member Sabrina Burnett performed Adele's "Make You Feel My Love." Additionally, our sisters decorated the venue with photo boards reading "Memories Matter," invited guests to write down their favorite memories at certain tables.

Sigma Kappa Spikeball

We launched a brand new, fun-filled philanthropy event this year: Sigma Kappa Spikeball! Taking place at Cal Poly's Recreational Center, we recruited teams from each fraternity to compete in a heated spikeball tournament. Our members served as coaches, referees, and fans of each team.

Donning our funkiest outfits and cheering on our favorite teams with colorful posters, we offered a competitive, athletic break from classes for a good cause―the proceeds raised were donated to the Alzheimer's Association!

With Sigma Kappa Spikeball, we hoped to foster a more inclusive, friendly environment within the Greek Life community. It was a huge hit this fall, and an event we will gladly continue to host in years to come!

All-American Cookout

Our chapter is dedicated to improving the environment. One of the ways we support our Inherit the Earth initiative is through our annual All-American Cookout! Every year, we host a charity barbecue for the San Luis Obispo community, and the proceeds raised are donated to the initiative. Last year we donated $5,000, and additional proceeds were given to the Alzheimer's Association!

The men of Alpha Gamma Rho barbecue steak for the event, which we serve with homemade salads and chips. Dressing in our most patriotic gear, we relax in the sunshine and enjoy a wonderful lunch with friends.

The All-American Cookout is open to all friends and family of Sigma Kappa, and we especially encourage parents to attend! This event is a great opportunity to learn more about Sigma Kappa.

Other philanthropies

We love participating in community service activities, from painting tables to carving pumpkins. Sigma Kappa often partners with other Greek life chapters or campus organizations to complete large projects, such as cleaning up the streets of San Luis Obispo. We often volunteer for the SLO Surfrider Foundation, the SLO Food Bank, and more!
